Fringe theater luminary, Beau O'Reilly and his cohorts Jenny Magnus, Troy Martin and Matt Test (fringe theater luminaries themselves), are The Crooked Mouth String Band, purveyors of original acoustic music with roots in vaudeville, who give songwriters their due, pretend to the folksy but lean on
the Brechtsy, and harmonize on themes of loss and forbearance. What more perfect musical enterprise can you imagine for All Hallow's Eve?
It was a fantastic show in an atmosphere of the darkly reverent and lightly irreverent. We had a fire in the fire pit, frolicking children and brilliant music. Beau was delightful in his uber-mustache; Jenny a ghost with a glorious voice and superior percussion skills; Troy and his uke did not disappoint; Mr. Test rocked the piano so hard, his beer crashed to the floor. Lena the spider queen graced the stage to deliver two of her original, haunting compositions--not bad for a 7 year old.
As the band reminded us, "it t'aint to sin, to take off your skin, and dance around in your bones." Indeed.
